Youth to Everest (16 days)

Open to school students aged 15 years and over, we operate Youth to Everest trips in the April school holiday period for New Zealand secondary schools. We also operate this trip for students outside New Zealand and will tailor the timing to suit. Youth to Everest offers a unique insight into the daily life of Sherpa people; we integrate with the local communities through involvement in specific projects, such as forest conservation and teaching in schools. These are life-changing experiences for our student travellers.

Itinerary

After two days enjoying the sights of historic Kathmandu, trekkers fly from Kathmandu to the alpine airport at Lukla, at the base of the Everest Valley. Lukla, at an altitude of 2,840m, is a significant village through which many trekkers and mountaineers pass each year. We are joined by porters who carry our kit-bags, enabling us to carry just day packs with our immediate requirements.

Over the next 5 days we trek to Namche, the capital for the Sherpa people, where we acclimatize for 2 nights before heading via Khunde’s Hospital and Khumjung’s Edmund Hillary School to Kanjuma. Our biggest trekking day takes us from 3,550m to 3,930m at Pangboche; we trek the Thyangboche Hill and then cross the plateau to Deboche and Pangboche; stunning views are in every direction. We spend 2 nights in the very comfortable Lodge and home of the Head Llama of the Pangboche Monastery, as well as ascending to 4,200m, the literal "high point" of our trip. At Pangboche we are mid-way up the Everest Valley, and within 12 kilometres of Mt Everest itself; we have several opportunities to sight Everest.

Whilst in the Khumbu we will be involved with the Reforestation Program that we have sponsored at Ghaat, and we also visit the Ghaat Village Primary School.

Our trek leadership team consists of a Group Leader and a Registered Nurse (both from New Zealand), a Head Sherpa (Sirdar) and one other Sherpa guide; we have a trek safety and management program that is second to none. Youth to Everest treks continue to be endorsed by many schools throughout New Zealand.
