Currency

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee. Approximate conversion rates (as at August 2010) are:

US$1:        75 rupees

NZ$1:        55 rupees

A$1:          69 rupees

US$ are accepted by most shops and hotels.

There are many official and unofficial money exchangers in Kathmandu, most offering similar rates for conversion of US$ into Rupees.

Cash is far more commonly used than credit card. Travellers’ cheques can be cashed at banks and hotels.
